We all know that H&M and collaborations are a perfect match. We’ve all stood in line for their annual collabs with big brands such as Marni, Margiela or Roberto Cavalli. But H&M doesn’t forget about young talent. Every year they organise the Design Award and this year the winner is Minju Kim, a student at the Fashion Academy in Antwerp with Korean roots. We got the opportunity to meet this promising young designer and take a look at her collection and were both very impressed. Not only is Minju incredibly friendly, her collection turned out beautifully with candy coloured, voluminous silhouettes.
Minju’s source of inspiration was the author Junji Ito and his Manga novels. She loves to dive into his world of black and white drawings and give them her own colourful interpretation. As a designer it was difficult to simplify her collection so it could be commercially produced by H&M, because she never thought real people would wear her collection on the street. Her favourite piece is the monster yellow coat with detachable back. She had to fight really hard to keep this one in the collection. Minju also loves the T-shirts with her drawings on them. It’s the most commercial and wearable piece in this collection but she is very pleased with the result.
Minju’s collection will be available from the 17th of October in Brussels and Antwerp, but sadly not in Ghent! Anyhow, we advise you to make a little roadtrip for this collection because it is just too good. We can assure you the fabrics are really beautiful and qualitative and the prices are very reasonable! Dat H&M sterk is in samenwerkingen hebben ze ondertussen al talloze keren bewezen. We hebben allemaal wel eens staan aanschuiven voor hun collabs met grote modehuizen als Marni, Margiela of Roberto Cavalli. Maar H&M geeft ook jong talent een kans met hun Design Award. Dit jaar is de winnares Minju Kim, een Koreaanse die studeerde aan de Modeacademie van Antwerpen. Wij kregen de kans deze veelbelovende ontwerpster te ontmoeten en haar collectie in preview te bekijken en waren allebei enorm onder de indruk. Niet alleen is Minju enorm sympathiek, het resultaat is een prachtige, kleurrijke collectie met volumineuze silhouetten in heerlijke snoepkleurtjes.
Minju’s inspiratiebron waren de Manga boeken van Junji Ito. Ze houdt ervan in zijn wereld van zwart-wit tekeningen te duiken en er zelf haar kleurrijke invulling aan te geven. Het was als ontwerpster wel even moeilijk om haar collectie dan uiteindelijk ook commercieel te laten produceren door H&M en haar creaties dus te simplificeren, aangezien ze nooit had gedacht dat haar originele collectie zou gedragen worden op straat. Haar favoriete stuk van deze lijn is zonder twijfel de reuze gele jas, met afritsbare rug. Ze heeft heel hard moeten vechten om deze collectie in de collectie te houden. Minju is ook positief verrast door de T-shirts met haar tekeningen erop en de draagbaarheid ervan. Het is het commercieelste stuk van deze collectie maar ze is heel tevreden met het resultaat.
Minju’s collectie is verkrijgbaar vanaf 17 oktober in Brussel in Antwerpen, maar jammer genoeg dus niet in Gent. Wij raden jullie toch aan een kijkje te gaan nemen aangezien het hier gaat om een buitenkans. Wij kunnen jullie verzekeren dat de collectie niet alleen kwalitatief is, maar bovendien ook zeer betaalbaar is. Bedankt Minju Kim en H&M voor het interview en de leuke namiddag!
